What is spec.R?

◆ Improved cooling efficiency leads to higher power output Cooling efficiency, the most critical factor for an intercooler, fluctuates based on various conditions such as core and tank size, tube/fin shape, intake air flow, and dwell time.

With the intercooler spec.R, we have successfully optimized the side tanks, cooling fins, and tube shapes to achieve superior cooling performance and stable intake air temperatures.

Compared to our conventional spec.S, repeated testing and refining of each component shape ensure that compressed air flows evenly into the core tubes, leading to the birth of spec.R.

By enhancing cooling performance and stabilizing intake air temperatures, we have enabled further power gains.

Thus, improved cooling efficiency directly contributes to improved high-power output.

◆ The relationship between pressure drop and cooling efficiency

To improve cooling performance, it is necessary to increase air dwell time within the tubes and ensure sufficient airflow hits the fins.

However, simply enlarging the tubes to increase air dwell also increases pressure drop, resulting in reduced throttle response.

Conversely, if air passes through the tubes without sufficient dwell, cooling performance drops, and while pressure drop is reduced, response is the only aspect that improves.

Therefore, pressure drop and cooling efficiency are inversely related. In extreme cases, one must choose between prioritizing response or cooling, depending on the driving stage and required specifications.

◆ HPI’s Development Concept

The spec.R is designed for all stages of driving, from the street to the circuit, and is a model that achieves a high-level balance between cooling performance and response to support everything from stock vehicles to boost-up and large-capacity turbine setups.

It delivers stable cooling performance not only during peak power runs but also under severe conditions, such as sports driving or continuous laps where intake air temperatures tend to rise, or in scenarios where the intercooler receives minimal airflow.

This allows the vehicle to unleash its inherent power, surpassing factory performance.

Since engine control unit (ECU) parameters significantly impact power characteristics, recalibrating the fuel, ignition, and electronic controls to match the cooling effect of the spec.R will realize even greater power output.
